The Simple Things in Life

Life is so, so sweet

I was originally going to make this long intricate post about things. But Calvin describes it so well. It’s amazing how so many people aspire to do great things, or achieve a specific goal. Not that either one is a bad thing in it’s own right, but the majority of the time it’s the simple things that really make an impact on your life. I guess I’ve had plenty of time this summer to consider my future and what kind of things I would like to happen, but I’ve come to the reality that there’s honestly not that much I want in life to be happy. I honestly don’t care if I have a high paying job, I just want to do something where I can be happy. I would love to have a wife and a family someday as well, someone that I enjoy spending time with. Kids that I can watch grow up and play with them. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for, is it?

It’s like the Peanuts comics, “Happyness is…” It’s the simple things that really make life special. Spending time with friends. Enjoying a hot (humid if you’re in Alabama) summer day outside. Exploring some place new that you’ve never been before. Sometimes I wish I could go back to being 10 when life felt so much simpler than it did now.

I Totally Hate Making Up Post Titles Because I Am Lacking In Creativity

Jeremy has come to town to visit, so that’s what I was keeping up with yesterday. Basically toured Birmingham and showed him what’s changed around here since he’s been gone. We basically caught up on things that have been going on as well. I hate that we’re living so far apart now, and wish I could at least have more chances to go up to the northwest just to hang out. I can’t believe that both Jeremy and Josh have outgrown me! I mean last time I saw Josh, he was about Kaleb’s age and height I think so not having seen him in 2-3 years… yeah.

Computer Junkie

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006 @ 11:48pm

So as par my last post, I’ve been working on an old machine to install Linux on. I was having some problems with the computer. I didn’t know if the hard drive was bad, the IDE cables were kaput, or the motherboard was shot. But thanks to Dana’s parents, I got some old PC part’s to check out! Upon trying out the new hard drive(s) I got the following error:

Keyboard Error: No Keyboard Present.
Press F1 to continue.

Oh gee, that sure is helpful! I wonder who came up with that? Unfortunately, the one floppy disc I had available somehow got corrupted so I won’t be able to flash the bios until I get another one. If that fails, I guess I’ll have to see if I can get a new motherboard. So if anyone would like to donate an AMD Socket A, ATX motherboard that supports SDRAM (PC100 or PC133) to my cause, I would be very happy!

In other PC related news, my new DVD-RW drive came in today. It’s pretty sweet. It supports DVD -R, +R, RW, Dual Layer along with CD-RW as well. I can burn a full 4.7GB DVD-R in only about 5 minutes! Time to finally clean up all the junk that has been piling up on my hard drive…

Linux

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006 @ 9:43am

So I’ve gone where I’ve never gone before. I’m finally about to use another operating system other than Microsoft’s Windows. I had an old PC in my closet that was just sitting there collecting dust, so I came up with the decision to install Linux (Open SuSE distribution) on it. I’m not sure exactly how I feel about it yet, but I think it will be a rather interesting experiment to see how everything goes. Doesn’t this look like the coolest logo ever? The SuSE distribution is a massive 3.5GB download, but thanks to bit torrent it was a rather quick operation that only took about 3 hours to download. Pretty nice eh? I’ll be working on installing that over the next few days, so I’ll let you know how it goes and I’ll probably even post a few screenshots of the operation too.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I’ve finally been admitted to UAB. Woohoo! (Yes, I’m still going to Samford… it’s just a real complicated issue, I just have to take one class fall/spring at UAB this next year in order to graduate)

It’s about time…

…to make another post I suppose. I guess there really hasn’t been too much going on, or really too much to say. Sleep, eat, work, eat, sleep. That almost describes my day(s) in a nutshell. Work’s going a little more smoothly than in the beginning, and I believe I now have a slight hang of it yet. I’m still not sure if this is exactly what I want to do for a living; but for the moment it pays the bills so I can’t really complain. But the weekend is coming up, so that’s exciting!

Clint and Dana have been over on various nights so that’s actually not too bad. It can get quite lonely if you have to spend several hours by yourself in the apartment. So I’ve been doing a good bit of reading and errands here and there when needed. I’ve gotten a good deal of piano practice in as well, and am working on an arrangement too so I suppose that’s not too bad. I haven’t been able to practice any saxophone yet since I need to get some reeds… but I suppose I’ll get those when my next paycheck comes in…

Oh yeah. I found a little song called Code Monkey that for some reason reminds me of my job… except my manager’s name isn’t Rob… and he’s not really boring. And I don’t really care too much for Mountain Dew, although Fritos are okay…

Wear Your Seatbelt!

Friday, June 2nd, 2006 @ 9:23pm

So I had an interesting lunch today, and I figured it would be blog worthy. Our group (at work) had decided to go out to lunch to California Pizza Kitchen. So we sat outside to enjoy the nice weather. Out on the patio outside of where this restaraunt is located is right near a really busy intersection. So we were finishing up our lunch and had started to pay our checks when we heard out of nowhere a loud sound as if a bomb had gone off, and I turned my head to see a car flying through the air doing a sideways flip to land on a mailtruck. Of course, that obviously got everyone’s attention and people rushed to the scene. Thankfully, the woman in the flipped car was wearing her seatbelt and she walked away from the scene.

And in the process, they took my leftovers away. So I complained and got a free meal. So goes the interesting afternoon…

It’s Just Me, Myself, and I…

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 @ 7:43pm

So I’m pretty much here at the apartment by myself now for the summer. Jeremy’s headed off to London/Spain. Kevin is well… who knows where. I haven’t seen him in weeks. But it should prove to be an interesting summer though.

I did enjoy my weekend however. Cleaned the majority of the apartment Sunday afternoon for some reason. I should’ve cleaned my car, it’s awful! It still has dirt and bugs from driving back from Dothan. We went bowling that afternoon too, I think I got a 132 the first game, then a 139 the 2nd so I was fairly pleased.

Monday was a holiday, so I didn’t work. Enjoyed sleeping in, which is becoming even more rare these days. Brought Jeremy to the airport so he could fly off for the summer. Oh well. Came back and ate lunch, then hung out with Dana for the afternoon. Oh yeah, Clint if you’re reading this, we watched The Italian Job. It was a really good movie, I was quite impressed!

Also becoming a little more comfortable with my job too. I’m still undecided if it’s exactly what I want to do yet, but I’ll give it a little more time and let it settle in some.

What a Week…

Saturday, May 27th, 2006 @ 12:04pm

Wow. That’s all I have to say about this week. The first week of my first “job” is over, and it’s been quite a week. For those of you who don’t know, I recently just got a programming internship at Infinity Insurance and it’s been very interesting. It’s been somewhat of a rough start, since at the beginning it was really slow, but it’s getting better. I was given a sort of project on Thursday, so once I get a better handle on that I’m sure it’ll be a lot better.

But I’ll be working 8-4:30 for 5 days a week, and it’s a really nice paying job, and should get me a lot of java programming experience. Although, I’m not sure if programming is exactly what I want to do but I’ll have a better grasp on that at the end of the summer if it’s really what I want to get into.

Jeremy leaves for London next Monday, so I’ll pretty much be by myself at the apartment for the whole summer. My other roommate’s work schedule is at night, and I’m during the day, so I won’t see him… not like I really see him that much right now anyway…

Summer Begins

Saturday, May 20th, 2006 @ 1:56am

SkidooLet the summer begin! So to start off my summer I went down to Jeremy’s lakehouse with Jeremy and Rick for the weekend. We left from home yesterday and stopped for lunch in Montgomery. Got to Dothan, and had an excellent dinner, then watched Whose Line is it Anyway then watched a really silly movie.

Today we went to the lake, as shown by the picture above. Obviously, we rode a couple of jetskis, and had some fun on the water and goofed off for the most of the day. And I got plenty of pictures, although Jeremy already posted most of them on his blog. But anyway, look at my comments to see a few more of the pictures that we took.

One More Exam Left!

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006 @ 6:02pm

SadieWoohoo! Only my online exam for Dr. Toone’s class is left (I’m trying to put it off for as long as possible, because it will be hard). I finally got some of my grades in too. I’m not really all that happy about piano, but that’s another story within itself. 3 semesters with a B. Japanese on the other hand, I made a B in as well, so I’m not really complaining considering the hard time I had all semester. Just have to wait on my other computer science grades to come in to help my gpa…

Gee, what's up Ricky?Anyway, my camera came in today! As you can see by a few of the pictures in my post, I’ve been playing with my new “toy” so to speak. As you can see to the left, there’s well… Sadie. She looks so innocent in that picture, unlike Rick! I don’t really know what it is about Rick, but he always has the best facial expressions in photos. I’m not sure what he’s looking at. Who knows? With Rick, it’s always a guess. Someone should come up with captions for these pictures… I had some pictures of Kenny too, but he deleted them before I got a chance to save them. I’ll be using my camera a lot more now, so you can expect to see more pictures in the future.
