Wii in 720p

Monday, March 30th, 2009 @ 4:10pm

I’m pretty impressed at what people can do with technology, and this is especially the case with things like homebrew and emulation. It’s amazing that there is already a Wii emulator out and it can do some pretty impressive stuff with existing games.

Take Wind Waker for example. The game already looks pretty great at its standard resolution, but boost it up to 720p and it looks fantastic! I would post the video, but you need to visit Youtube and click on “HD” for the full effect. There’s also videos of the Metroid Prime series, Mario Sunshine, and Smash Bros. Brawl, all available in 720p if you browse through the related videos.

I really hate that the whole Wind Waker style has shifted to the hand held Zeldas, as I would really enjoy to see them employ that style again. Amazingly, Wind Waker today looks less dated when compared to Twilight Princess which was released 5 years later.

Mario Bassoon Quintet

Sunday, September 21st, 2008 @ 7:07pm

You don’t see very many good student bassoonists, as the instrument itself tends to be very expensive and is somewhat difficult to play. The following video is various arrangements for bassoon quintet playing various Mario themes. Enjoy!

Mario Kart

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 @ 12:30am

I had not played Mario Kart in a while due to sparsely playing other games (Okami, TF2, Lunar 2 to mention a few)… And was reminded there’s a lot of crap that goes on in the latest iteration of the game. So I present to you, Jason’s Laws of Mario Kart!

1st place is only a punishment.

Players who are in 1st place really don’t belong there anyway. So to help prevent someone from hogging first place too long an army of blue shells will be sent to remove said player from position. A player in 1st place is really being anti-social, but a couple of blue shells will help to put them back in their place with the rest of the group. Remember, Mario Kart is really a party game, so we don’t want someone to be a loner!

Dodging a blue shells requires a doctorate’s degree in astrophysics.

Blue shell dynamics are a mystery to most, and is under intense study by top scholars. Unfortunately for the rest of us who can’t afford to attend MIT, the avoidance of an incoming blue shell remains elusive.

Chance for lightning strike when there is no ground below increases ten fold.

Yet another mystery of nature unsolved. You’re happily flying along over a ramp, and when you least expect it, a bolt comes out of the blue sending you off into the deep abyss below. Many scholars suggest that ramps increase your negative charge to attract the lightning, but many dispute this theory. For now, it remains a mystery why this phenomenon happens.

Mario Galaxy on Piano

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 @ 5:58pm

Whoever the person is above is fairly talented and plays by ear fairly well. While (in my opinion) some of his arrangements are a little too “notey”, he still has some fantastic renditions of some of the main themes from Super Mario Galaxy. I would recommend checking out some of his other videos if you have played Mario Galaxy, and even if you haven’t, since the music is fantastic.

Seeing this REALLY makes me miss not having a piano. I really want one badly, but with the unfortunate accident has put me in not so great of a financial situation to be able to purchase one. I’m really afraid I will lose a lot of my muscle strength in my fingers from the lack of playing. Maybe after I get my rent settled for the next 6 months I can begin looking again…

Random Fact of the Day

The random bushes in Mario? They were just clouds. Observe:

It's a cloud!

Desktop VR Display

This is an amazing idea. I will be looking forward to see if any developers come out with a game implementing this idea.

In Soviet Russia, Games Play You!

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Someone has made a hacked level from Super Mario World where you have to do very little other than push a button here and there, you don’t even have to really move.

All I can really say, is either someone was really bored, or had a little too much time on their hands — or possibly even both!
